If your business sits near a university, thousands of potential regulars walk past every week. Most of them already have a routine: the same coffee on the way to lectures, the same lunch spot, the same barber their flatmate recommended. Getting into that routine is the whole game.

The good news is that it rarely takes a big budget. Students are practical. They want a clear reason to choose you, they listen to their friends, and once they find somewhere they like, they come back. This guide covers when students actually spend, what tips the decision your way, and the low-cost things you can start this week.

When students actually spend

Student footfall follows the academic calendar, not the normal retail one. Plan around it and you’ll stop being surprised by quiet weeks.

The academic year sets the rhythm

  • Freshers’ week and the first weeks of term (usually late September into October) are when new students are choosing their places. Habits formed now can last the whole year, or the whole degree.
  • Term time is your steady trade. Weekdays are busiest near campus; weekends matter more near halls and the town centre.
  • Christmas, Easter and summer breaks are quieter, as many students go home. Postgraduates and international students often stay, so it rarely drops to nothing.

Every university publishes its own term dates. Look up your nearest one, or two if you’re between campuses, and put the key dates in your diary for the year. If you want a sense of how big the market on your doorstep is, the Higher Education Statistics Agency publishes student numbers for each UK university.

Exam season changes the pattern

In January and again from around May into June, routines shift. Students spend longer in libraries and study spaces, take shorter breaks, and lean on coffee, quick food and anything that saves time. Social spending on evenings out tends to dip. A café near the library can have a busy exam season; a bar might not.

The daily rhythm

Lunch between lectures and the late afternoon slump are the two moments most student-facing businesses notice. Early mornings are often slower than you’d expect. Your own till history is the best guide: look at which hours are quiet during term, because those are the hours a student offer can fill.

What makes a student choose you

A clear reason, in one sentence

“20% off any hot drink” or “any cut for £15” works because a student can read it in two seconds and repeat it to a friend. Vague promises like “student friendly prices” do not. You don’t need your biggest discount; you need one that is easy to understand.

Being on the route

Students build routines around the walk between halls, lectures and the station. If you’re on that route, make sure they can see you are there for them: a board outside, an offer in the window, opening hours that match their day. If you’re a street away, you have to give them a reason to make the detour.

Social proof

A recommendation from a flatmate beats any advert. Reviews matter too: students check Google Maps before trying somewhere new. Keep your Google Business Profile up to date with real photos, your menu or price list, and accurate hours.

Instagram and TikTok

You don’t need a content plan. Short, honest videos of what you actually make, the latte art, the fade, the tray of pastries coming out of the oven, are the kind of thing students share. Post consistently rather than perfectly.

A reason to come back

Most students run tight budgets, so loyalty matters to them. A stamp card, a small thank-you on the fifth visit, or simply remembering their order all give them a reason to pick you again instead of trying somewhere new.

Students don’t need the cheapest option. They need an obvious reason to choose you, and a reason to come back.

Low-cost things you can do this week

  1. Update your Google Business Profile. Check your hours, add fresh photos and make sure your menu or prices are on it.
  2. Put one student offer on a board outside. Big letters, one line, no small print hiding the catch.
  3. Contact your Students’ Union and a few societies. Many societies look for local businesses to host socials or offer members a perk. A sports team that comes in after training every week is worth more than a one-off flyer.
  4. Film one short video. Something you make or do, 15 to 30 seconds, posted where students scroll.
  5. Start a simple loyalty habit. A stamp card costs very little and gives students a reason to return.
  6. Ask at the till. “How did you find us?” takes five seconds and tells you what is working.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Discounting everything, all the time. It trains students to wait for the deal and eats into every sale. One targeted offer usually does more. Our guide to student discount ideas that protect your margins walks through the options.
  • Surprise conditions at the till. If the offer only works on certain days or items, say so up front. Feeling caught out is the fastest way to lose a student, and their friends.
  • Only thinking about Freshers. The first weeks matter, but students keep making choices all year. A steady presence beats one big push in September.
  • Treating all students the same. First-years, postgraduates, international students and mature students have different routines and budgets. Watch who actually comes in.
  • Forgetting to tell your staff. An offer that the person on the till doesn’t know about is worse than no offer.

Where Gradia fits in

Honest disclosure: Gradia publishes this guide, and the section below describes our own service. Everything above applies whether or not you use it.

Gradia is a free app for verified UK university students, and local businesses near campus can list a student offer on it. It is one way to put a clear reason to choose you in front of students who are already looking for places to eat, drink, get a haircut or train nearby.

  • Free to list one offer. No commission and no card needed to get started.
  • Verified students only. Students join with their university email, so the offer goes to the people you made it for.
  • No new kit. At the till, the student shows you their total in the app and your staff read out today’s 6-digit code. The discount unlocks before they pay. It works with any till.
  • A reason to come back. Students earn points each time they use an offer (25 points per use), which encourages repeat visits.
  • Free extras once you’re live. A free feature on Gradia’s Instagram and a free short video of your store, filmed by a student.

There are also optional paid extras if you want more, such as extra offers or locations; nothing is added automatically. You can see how it works and what it costs, or read how Gradia works for students. To be straight with you: Gradia gives students a way to find and use your offer, but it cannot guarantee customers. Your offer, your location and your service still do the heavy lifting.

The Verdict

Be easy to find, easy to understand and easy to return to.

Learn the academic calendar, find your quiet hours, and give students one clear reason to walk in. Then make the second visit as easy as the first. None of it needs a big budget, just a bit of consistency.

One last thing

Once you know what will bring students in, the next question is what to offer without giving away your profit. Our guide to student discount ideas for small businesses has worked examples for cafés, barbers and bakeries.
